NOTE: These last 4 chapters of the Gospel of John swiftly bring us to the consummation of the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cameto die! He cameto work redemption and reconciliation for the human race through His blood - for the lifeis in the blood! His death, burial, Resurrection, Ascension and the Giving of the Holy Spirit is the very heartof the Gospel. It isGood News! It is thiswe are to proclaim - notprimarily our experiences, but Jesus' and His Finished Work! It is our report on thisthat brings conviction, repentance and conversion. It is thismessage that the Holy Spirit is pleased to confirm.

In 18:6 we read how the Father wanted the enemies of our Lord to know that apart from His will, they never could have taken His Son. Even Judas fell backwards at Jesus' word of “E-GOei-mi” - I AM. The Father has given Jesus the Name of the Triune God: Jehovah - I AM. He is the sameyesterday, today and forever. Before Abraham, He was I AM. “I am the Alpha and the O, says the Lord :God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8). Thisis the very meaning of God's Name - Jehovah -

Ye = who is to come

ho= who is

vah = who was

The 3 parts of the verb “to be” are integrally found in the name of Ye-hoVAH, or Jehovah. The introduction to the Thomas Newberry Reference Edition Bible, 1893, has yet more on this enlightening insight (A Kregel Publication).

How terrible for Judas and those who took Jesus in the garden. There is now a Mansitting at the right hand of the Father on His Throne - and His Name is Jesus, which means “Jehovah is Salvation”.

In this passage there is also Peter's 3-fold denial of his Christ, as predicted by Jesus. But how different is Peter in Acts chapter 2 after being baptized in the Holy Spirit. Nowhe is like Paul in Galatians 2:20! Indeed, whata difference! In John 20 Jesus breathed on the 11, and they received the Holy Spirit inthem. But in Acts 1:8 they tarried and the Holy Spirit came uponthem, filling them and immersing them in Spirit. Christ was now both inthem through the Spirit, and they in Him, because the Spirit came upon (Epi) them, immersing them in Himself. Their cup overflowed in the sink, not only filling them, but immersingthem. There isa distinct difference between an “eis - into” experience, and an “Epi- upon”experience.

And lastly, notice the response of Jesus in 18:23 after He had been unrighteously struckby an officer of the high priest! Again, think of the chagrin for this man and those with him at the final Great White Throne Judgment - when he will face the Lord Jesus again, but thistime as Final Judge of all things by the will of the Father, to answer for his unrighteous act to the very Son of God!

Paul spoke to Felix the Roman Governor in Acts 24:25, and “reasoned of righteousness, and self-control, and the judgment to comeandFelix was terrified!And well might he be - and all others apart from Christ! J.A.W.
